A child’s development can start even before delivery. It is not enough that parents are concerned with child’s development when he or she is already a toddler. New parents should also be concerned with the child’s prenatal development.

Ideally, a woman should visit her health care provided for the pre-conception care. This is a chance to learn how to incorporate one’s lifestyle for a healthier pregnancy. This would include a physical exam and a pap smear.
In any case, if one does get pregnant, prenatal care becomes highly important. This refers to the medical and nursing care necessary for women during pregnancy. This also includes any problem a woman would have during delivery. As soon as pregnancy is confirmed, prenatal care should start. A healthy pregnancy would produce a healthy baby. This includes monthly visits to the doctor and an assessment of parental needs.

Consultations with the doctor would include the necessary tests. Prenatal tests are the tests for screening and diagnosis to detect different risk factors and genetic disorders. Catching these risk factors early during one’s pregnancy may help prevent any diseases that might cause harm to the baby and the mother. A good prenatal care would also decrease the risk of miscarriages and maternal deaths. These tests would include a physical examination by collecting the mother’s medical history, blood pressure, blood and urine tests. Ultrasounds are also very common. It is typically performed topically or on the surface of the skin. A transvaginal ultrasound however is used to create a better image quality. An ultrasound is used to check for multiple fetuses, determine the sex, and assess the possible risk of the mother, fetal malformation, intrauterine growth retardation, and the due date of the baby.

In prenatal care the doctor may also recommend a nutritional diet, supplemental vitamins or exercises. For prenatal vitamins a pregnant woman is advised to consume vitamins with folic acid to prevent neural tube defects. Additional iron and calcium is also needed. This helps build strong bones and teeth for the baby.
